In the next few months,
Intermountain Sport Fishing along with Waterstewardship
Fisheries will be conducting a project on Dauphin Lake that
involves tagging and radiotelemetry of fis
h.
The objective is to obtain data on Walleye, Pike, Tulibee, and
Perch populations in various locations on Dauphin Lake. We will
be tagging 3,000 fish over the next 6 months, along with
installing 30 radiotelemetry tags which will allow us to better
understand fish movements throughout the lake and river systems
for years to come. We will use angling methods during the ice
season to get the sample fish required, then in the open water
season, will be using live trap netting methods, which will
easily allow us to catch, sample, and release the fish without
any harm being done to them. We are asking for fishermens
assistance in this project.
IF YOU CATCH A
TAGGED FISH:
WE Need:
THE DATE, THE
LOCATION, THE SPECIES,THE LENGTH, THE TAG#, and whether the fish
was released. Please note this information and report it to Don
@ Stickys Bait and Tackle, 638-3658, or Lloyd Rowe FISHERIES,
622-2104 or go to
www.isfe.ca
for contact info. Most of the fish tagged will be of the
protected size, so we strongly encourage its release.
We would like to
determine whether perhaps some of our fish are not only river
spawners, but lake spawners as well, and using radiotelemetry,
we will be able to track the movements of these fish, define
spawning areas that are not already known to us, and then
enhance these areas to make them more productive for our fish.
We would also like to track fish movements that may be happening
thru the Mossey River Dam system and into Lake Winnipegosis.
As we collect this
information, we will also be taking scale samples, and measuring
the fish so we may determine age and growth rates as well, from
the information supplied to us by fisherman who supply us with
tag information throughout the upcoming years. Again most of the
tagged fish are illegal to keep, so we strongly encourage their
release, especially the ones with the transmitters on them, as
they are very valuable to the project.
As we realize
Dauphin Lake is in pretty good shape regarding our fishery right
now, with projects such as this, it will help ensure that it
could remain that way.
The funding
partners for this project are the Fish Enhancement Fund, the
Province of Manitoba Fisheries Dept, and all the supporters we
have for Intermountain Sport Fishing Group.
Over the past 20
years, we have inputted hundreds of thousands of dollars to help
get our fishery as to the way it is today, and to continue in
the future.
Projects continuing
are operating the Methley Beach Walleye Rearing Ponds, doing an
assessment on the Ryz Crossing fish diversion, hosting family
and kids fishing events, conducting the CAMPFISH program, and
upkeeping Uncle Bobs Trout Pond.
Intermountain
Sport Fishing will also be recognized at our upcoming banquet in
April, for winning one of Canadas Recreational Fishing Awards
for 2011, with representatives from Ottawa presenting to our
group, acknowledging the hard work this group has put into our
local fishing holes. A few years back when Dauphin took part in
the Ultimate Fishing Town contest, we finished 3rd in
Canada, we won $1000 from the World Fishing Network Television
show, and the Province of Manitoba awarded us $25,000 for
everyones efforts involving the contest. We have earmarked this
money to continue our youth fishing programs such as CAMPFISH
for the next 5 years. We would like to thank everyone, for their
help & cooperation with the upcoming tagging projects, and any
past and future fish enhancement activities.
